PREQUISITES/COREQUISITES

PRIOR TO COMMENCING THE PROGRAM
We require students to complete the following:

(1) Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR level ‘C’ Certification OR Standard First Aid and Health Care Provider CPR level ‘HCP’ Certification

This certification program should cover CPR and choking procedures (adult, child, infant and 2-rescuer), heart attacks and strokes, AED intro, as well as topics such as bleeding, shock, fainting, poisoning, epilepsy, diabetic emergencies, allergic reactions, burn accidents, heat and cold emergencies, head, neck and musculoskeletal injuries. Available from the Canadian Red Cross Society, the American Red Cross and similar associations (approximately 14-18 hours long).  Please note: re-certification is normally required every three years.  Valid certification must be maintained for the duration of your studies.

(2) Human Anatomy and Physiology I (3 credits/45 hours)

     AND

Human Anatomy and Physiology II (3 credits/45 hours)

These two courses should focus on providing an integrated understanding of basic human structure and function and be designed for students pursuing careers in health fields.  Specific body systems covered in depth should include cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, nervous, immune, lymphatic, digestive, urinary, reproductive, skin and body membrane, skeletal and muscular systems.  The student should come to appreciate the structure and function of the healthy body as a dynamic system that works to maintain a constant homeostatic environment, while disease processes reflect a disruption to normal structure and function. Courses are available through on-line learning programs or classroom/laboratory attendance.  Institutions must hold a provincial charter and be members of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada or be accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.  All courses must have a grade of 70% or higher to be eligible for credit transfer. Partial credit from multiple courses may not be combined to meet one requirement.

Prior Anatomy and Physiology coursework/credits must have been completed within seven years of starting the program, to ensure current access to this knowledge. If you studied/received credits for A&P more than seven years ago, you must either repeat the credits before enrollment OR successfully challenge this requirement through a challenge exam.

One possible route is ExcelsiorCollege Examinations, Arts and Science exams, Anatomy and Physiology 506 (6 credits, $295 US approx.)  Registration for the exam is at www.excelsior.edu and the test is taken at a local Pearson Professional Centre, in Canada or the US.

Exceptions to the seven year rule may be made for currently practicing, licensed medical or complementary medical professionals, who use their knowledge on a regular basis: please contact the College Admissions Board.
